Julie Kohlhart, Ph.D.

Staff Psychologist
Professional Background
My approach is curious, compassionate, and challenging. I believe therapy should be a safe place to explore yourself in connection to the world around you, and I use evidence-based tools that come from what research shows can work for growth and change. I believe in considering the unique perspectives and experiences of each individual and tailor the counseling process to your needs and context. My areas of practice include therapy for relationship and family issues, grief, stress, trauma, depression, addiction recovery, ADHD, OCD, sexual identity, gender identity, and anxiety or worry. I have also been fortunate enough to serve people who come from a variety of backgrounds, race/ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, relationship preferences, and gender identities. I believe that cultural humility and understanding issues of intersecting identities is essential. My experience prior to KUMC included teaching and training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) where I helped graduate students hone their therapy skills to be counselors and psychologists. I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from UMKC and trained at university counseling centers including Kansas State, UMKC Counseling Services, Rockhurst University, and the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI). My post-doctoral hours were spent at the UMKC Counseling Services, as well as UMKC’s Community Counseling Assessment Services providing individual counseling and assessment for ADHD and Learning Disabilities. My APA accredited internship at Kansas State University provided training in individual, couples, group therapy, eating disorder assessment and treatment, and biofeedback. I also have experience working as a masters-level clinician in community mental health, specifically inpatient/outpatient treatment for substance abuse and trauma. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors and being active, eating, reading, being creative, spending time with friends and family, and learning mindfulness practices. I also have two dogs that ask for a lot of attention and I teach a substance use treatment course at UMKC.
