Brian D. Seiler, Ph.D., LAT, ATC, PES, CES, BCS

Professional Background

Brian D. Seiler, Ph.D., ATC, PES, CES, BCS, joined the faculty in the KU Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, and Athletic Training in the summer of 2021. Prior to coming to KU, he taught in higher education for seven years with clinical experience in collegiate and high school track and field programs. He has also traveled with The Cadets drum corps to provide clinical care to participants.

In addition to serving as director of clinical education for KU’s master’s degree program in athletic training, Seiler teaches courses covering areas including therapeutic modalities, behavioral health, and sport psychology. He is responsible for the progression of students through the clinical curriculum and addresses clinical experience concerns when athletic training students are completing their integrated clinical education and immersive clinical experiences.

Since 2004, Seiler has been an active member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. He has served on multiple committees at the state level, focused mostly on student education and leadership. Seiler has specialized certifications in performance enhancement, correct exercise, and behavior change from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He also serves on the exam development committee for the board of certification and is a frequent journal reviewer.

Academic Background
Seiler began his education at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pa., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. Subsequently, he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for collegiate and high school athletics while completing his master’s degree in sport psychology at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. He then attended the University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C., where he earned his doctorate in physical education with emphasis in developmental foundations.

Research

Overview

Seiler has two main research areas. From a neuroscience perspective, he has examined the objective validation of an imagery ability questionnaire using functional magnetic resonance imaging to correlate areas of brain activation when completing simple tasks.

He is also a member of the Leveraging Education And Research Network for Athletic Training. From an educational perspective, Seiler is currently investigating questions related to athletic training student confidence and clinical decision making. In addition, he has a vested interest in the mental heath of athletic training students throughout a professional program.
