What is Night @ The Lab

Night @ The Lab is a research-based competition held in the fall among teams of Kansas high school students. Teams are given a topic related to health care which they will research, create a visual display, and an oral presentation. Together, the students will gain valuable experience in both research skills and professional presentation skills.

How Night @ The Lab Works

Night @ The Lab is open to all high schools in Kansas and each school may have as many teams of 2-3 students as they wish. The competition consists of two rounds.

  • Round 1 – Regional Competition
    • For the first round, teams will compete by submitting a recording of their visual display and oral presentation. Teams will be placed in one of six regions depending on the location of the school. A panel of judges will score each submission and the winning team from each region will advance to the next round.
  • Round 2 – Statewide Competition
    • The six winning teams will compete against each other on the campus of KU Medical Center. Teams will give their presentations to members of the KU Medical Center community as well as a panel of judges made up of experts. The team with the highest score will be named the Night @ The Lab Statewide Champion.

The teams advancing to the statewide competition will be rewarded with hotel accommodations, meals, and a tour of some of the research departments at KU Medical Center.
