Nathan Bahr portrait
Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases

Professional Background

Dr. Bahr received his undergraduate degree from Loras College in Dubuque Iowa. He attended medical school at Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of medicine where he also completed a MA in bioethics and health policy. During medical school Dr. Bahr developed a passion for global health.

Dr. Bahr trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota where he began to develop his career path at the intersection of infectious diseases research and global health. As part of Dr. Bahr's training he received a prestigious Fogarty Fellowship from the NIH and spent that year in Uganda working to improve diagnosis of TB meningitis as part of team at the Infectious Diseases Institute of Makerere University. He subsequently completed his infectious diseases training at the University of Kansas Medical Center prior to joining the faculty.

Dr Bahr continues to work closely with collaborators in Uganda and around the world with a heavy focus on improving outcomes in persons with TB meningitis and cryptococcal meningitis. He currently has NIH funding with a focus on improving the diagnosis of TB meningitis and histoplasmosis and has established new collaborations to work on HIV-associated histoplasmosis. Dr. Bahr is passionate about leveraging his expertise to work on improving outcomes in conditions that disproportionately affect disadvantaged populations.

Research

Overview

Much of Dr Bahr's current research is focused on improving diagnosis of two infectious diseases - histoplasmosis and TB meningitis. Both of these conditions occur in the U.S. and globally. Histoplasmosis is relatively common in Kansas. Both of these conditions are particularly deadly when they occur in people living with HIV. Dr. Bahr is also interested in other infections that similarly affect underserved populations, infections of the central nervous system, the expanding epidemiology of endemic fungi, factors related to pharmaceutical pricing and diagnostic testing in infectious diseases.
