Overview of Divisions

It is the policy of the University of Kansas Medical Center Public Safety Department to provide general law enforcement, criminal investigations, order maintenance, emergency response, and day-to day security measures to those citizens who work at and visit the University of Kansas Medical Center and The University of Kansas Hospital. To address this policy, the Public Safety Department is comprised of two major organizational elements: Police Operations Division and Security Operations Division.

Police Operations Division

There are six Units that comprise the Division of Police Operations: Administration, Inventory and Fleet Operatons, Investigations, Patrol, Police Dispatch, and Police Training and Community Outreach.

Administration Unit

The Administration Unit performs the administrative and logistical functions that are crucial to the effective operations of the department. This division handles a wide variety of tasks for the entire Department of Public Safety. These services include human resources management, benefits, payroll, accounts payable and procurement, recruitment, on-boarding and civilian training, official Public Safety communiques, reports and evidence management, fingerprinting services, and internal technology support.

Inventory and Fleet Operations Unit

The Inventory and Fleet Operations Unit purchases, issues, and tracks all uniforms, weapons, and related gear and accessories for both the Police Operations Division and the Security Operations Division. They also manage the care and repair of the vehicles assigned to both divisions.

Investigations Unit

The Investigations Unit is responsible for the investigation of crimes reported to this department.  They also liaise with investigators of local, state, and federal agencies to our mutual benefit in solving crimes.

Patrol Unit

The most visible component of the Police Division is the Patrol Unit, which is responsible for the day-to-day delivery of police services, and whose main objective is to keep the campus safe. These are the uniformed men and women who patrol the city's neighborhoods, parking lots and buildings. The highly trained and experienced professionals who comprise this unit focus on detecting a wide range of criminal activities and their expertise in a variety of police science disciplines enables them to skillfully investigate crime and apprehend offenders. Bicycle patrol officers are part of this unit as well. There are staff members of this unit on both the Main Campus and the Strawberry Hill Campus.

Police Dispatch Unit

The Police Dispatch Unit staff are the hub of activity as they handle the phone calls, radio traffic, alarms, and dispatching needs, not only of Public Safety, but of other departments across both the University and the Hospital.

Police Training and Community Outreach Unit

The Police Training portion of this unit is responsible for providing/scheduling training programs for the Police Officers.

The Community Outreach personnel are responsible for providing information to new-hires, training on R.A.D. and other safety programs, and connection to many resources for our campus community. They provide opportunities for the Public Safety department to engage with both the campus community and the larger community that our campus is within, to improve relationships and forge new partnerships.
